The memory foam pillow is the one type of pillow that consistently receives the best feedback. There are many types of pillow to choose from each with their own pros and cons. Basic microfiber ones and exotic feather fill gets the job done, but sometimes lack the right neck and head support or cause allergic reactions. There?s also latex pillows which are in their own category; latex sometimes causes bad reactions for people sensitive to it.
Finding just the right pillow type for your sleeping style and needs is tough. You don?t want to choose poorly and have an uncomfortable night?s sleep. Worse still, new neck or back problems could result from picking the wrong type, shape or support level. Care is required to pick an appropriate pillow for your personal needs to get the best night?s rest.
Let?s start by providing an overview of the types of memory foam pillows that are available in the market.
Types of Memory Foam Pillows
Memory foam pillows aren?t the same as other types pillows because they?re often available in a variety of sizes to match the size of the bed. Along with a Standard size, sometimes they?re offered in Queen or King sizes to fit two pillows side-by-side on a Queen or King-size bed without inconvenient gaps left at the top of the mattress.
Read further to see what types of memory foam pillows are sold in the market today and what their best use is:
The contour memory foam pillow is created using a rectangular block of viscoelastic foam. The foam is shaped with a light groove and a couple of ridges tracking across the pillow from left to right. The design is intended to better cradle the head with the groove with the ridges offering better neck support during extended sleep.
Reducing neck pain is important to customers, especially those who are genetically pre-disposed to neck issues, suffered whiplash in a car accident or a sports-related injury. The contour pillow type is popular with people who experience neck problems during the daytime or from their tossing and turning in bed.
Back sleepers also find the contour shape avoids creating new problems with a pillow that extends their neck too far away and above their back.
The shredded memory foam pillow design differs markedly from other pillow styles including the contour one above. The basic shape is more oblong, but it does often come in several sizes including Standard, and Queen or King, or all three choices. The sizes are not standardized between manufacturers though, so what Queen size from one brand is often different to another brand.
The level of loft (or height) of the shredded pillow fits in the middle of pillow height levels. As such, for people who find high pillows too uncomfortable on their neck, the shredded style is a good mid-point for them.
The memory foam is shredded up into hundreds or thousands of slivers to fill up every part of its shape. The main reason for the shredded design is to avoid a common problem of memory foam with trapped heat building up over the hours of sleep to create a hot neck and head when waking up earlier than expected.
The ability to reshape a shredded pillow, prop it up and mold it to be slimmer or bulkier is a nice extra if you?re very particular about getting your pillow to feel ?just right? for a good night?s sleep. It?s also often possible to adjust its height by removing part of the foam filling; this customization isn?t available with several other pillow types.
The wedge pillow is covered here for completeness. A memory foam wedge pillow adopts a triangular shape with has a gradual slant. It resembles a mini ski slope. These pillows come in many different sizes which change who can use it and how it?s used.
The wedge design is useful for a variety of medical issues like sinus and acid reflux, and breathing difficulties. Both babies and adults find them useful at times. The back can be raised using one and it makes for a relaxed position to lie back and read a book. For pregnant women, using a wedge pillow is helpful to reduce back strain.
The triangular designed pillow is also popular in Asian countries.
The bamboo memory foam pillows include the use of eco-friendly bamboo fiber in their pillow covers. Bamboo fiber is hypoallergenic, anti-bacterial, and good for people with prolonged lung issues, allergies and those with Asthma. The fabric mix offers greater breathability and avoids picking up germs and bacteria to prevent breathing it into the lungs which sleeping.
Bamboo also helps to wick moisture away making it a good solution to remove sweat development on hot nights. When winter settles in, the inclusion of bamboo into the fabric cover provides better control of temperatures to keep the whole bed warmer.
Multiple types of pillows include bamboo in their covers. Therefore, a gel memory foam pillow, shredded memory foam pillow or another type could use bamboo too.
Gel memory foam pillows are mainly made from foam, but they include a top layer of gel beads. The foam tends to be close to the responsiveness of latex to rebound its?shape faster than one would expect.
The gel reshapes when changing its form in response to body heat. The heat is then taken inside the gel beads to remove it from the top of the pillow. The entire surface of the gel layer is used to disperse the heat and not keep it in one area. Air circulation over the parts of the pillow that the head is not resting on,?assist in cooling the entire gel layer to further reduce the heat levels experienced.
The use of gel beads as a layer within a memory foam mattress has revolutionized heat management for this type of product. Similarly, the use of gel in memory foam pillows has offered a different way to manage heat levels for people who do not require a specialized pillow type.
The traditional foam pillow is a rectangular shape that sits at a low loft position. With foam pillows, the shape is cut from a single piece of prepared foam to a specific size and come in two versions.
The first version uses one seam running all around the pillow?s fabric. The corners and edges slope upwards and downwards. The second version, sometimes called a gusset pillow, uses a double seam to permit a raised loft with more filling but is a similar shape and size. The raised level provides better support for the shoulder and neck areas.
What you need to know
It?s useful to understand the basic pros and cons of memory foam pillows to appreciate their advantages and disadvantages. After all, no pillow is perfect for everyone and we understand that.
- Alignment of the Spine: The spine is better supported using improved spinal adjustment and pressure mitigation when the pillow molds to the shape of the head and neck areas. Gravity pushes the body downwards and the memory foam provides support, particularly for side and back sleepers.
- Relief from Pain: Individual pressure points are relieved by the foam that supports and spreads the downward pressure across the pillow. Some pillows are also shaped in a way to separately support the shoulders, neck and head appropriately. With adequate support, the muscles get a chance to recover from holding the head up all day.
- Better Hygiene: Some memory foam pillows can be washed in the washing machine. Shredded memory foam pillows are the most likely to withstand washing in this way. In the case of shaped pillows, only their covers are washable.
- Hypoallergenic: The foam used is often hypoallergenic to avoid the buildup of mites and mildew. Allergic reactions, respiratory problems, and Asthma issues are reduced through cleaner breathing and a lack of new irritants introduced.
- Support: The use of viscoelastic foam is highly supportive due to using high-density foam. Contoured pillows that provide improved back sleeper support are the best for this type of pillow filling.
- Firmer is better: The firmness level of memory foam pillow is medium-firm which offers good support for the head, neck, and shoulders. Other pillows, especially feather fills, tends to be medium-firm or lower density which isn?t always ideal.
- Weight: These types of pillows tend to be a little heavier than feather pillows. Typically, you?re talking about less than 5-lbs heavier, so it?s not that much. The density of the foam also has a measurement in pounds, but this is not to be confused with the actual weight of the product.
- Heat: A buildup of heat during the night is not a positive sign. This is particularly true in climates that experience a higher overnight temperature. The viscoelastic foam does get warmer than feather or another fill type, but improvements with gel beads, ventilated foam, and shredded foam help to dissipate heat levels. Breathable covers also help whisk away moisture and dampen heat levels too.
- Off-gassing: New memory foam products, whether a pillow or a mattress, arrive with a noticeable chemical smell once they?ve been unpacked. This is produced during the product?s creation. It usually takes a few days for the odor to subside. Some pillows are washable which removes the chemical odor sooner. Letting a pillow air out in a spare bedroom for a few days before using it is the best approach.
Our 5 Memory Foam Pillow Recommendations
Eve Pillow Review
The Eve Pillow is a white one with a yellow seam trim around the center which matches other Eve products perfectly. Unlike other manufacturers, the belief is that one size fits all, so there?s only one size offered. The pillow measures 16.5-inches by 26-inches and weighs 3.7 pounds.
The core of the pillow has memory foam with a new formulation to be responsive to movement. The contouring of the body is excellent here which relieves pressure points and supports the head and neck well. The level of support is greater than a fiber fill or feather pillow option.
A series of holes penetrate the foam throughout to let air flow more easily. The pillow should stay cool for hot sleepers. There?s an UltraFresh protocol used to ward off mold, bacteria, and mildew building up over use.
The OEKO-TEX Class 1 cover is removable and washable at up to 40-degrees to remove any stains or germ buildup. It?s made from a Jersey polyester fabric that resists pilling from use and is naturally hypoallergenic too. The cover is knitted rather than woven which makes it stretchier. A pillow case measuring 20-inches by 30-inches or 20-inches by 27-inches (or the Eve pillow case) will all fit it.
The pillow comes with the standard Eve 30-night trial period and a three-year guarantee is also provided with this product.
The Eve Pillow is a well put together product. The company has followed their same approach that a single type of product is the right way to go rather than offer multiple variations. This may be appropriate for their mattress, but some consumers will have liked to see multiple size choices available. The warranty isn?t the longest we?ve seen, but it?s more than adequate.

Coop Home Goods Premium Adjustable Loft Shredded Pillow Review
The shredded memory foam pillow from Coop Home Goods offers some interesting choices.
The inner case uses an interlocking fabric for a smoother feel. It unzips at the side with the shredded foam able to be removed based on how much loft/height you want to have. As long as the foam is stored safely, it could be re-inserted later if you change your sleeping posture from a back sleeper to a side sleeper where you?d need a greater loft.
Coop uses a proprietary viscoelastic memory foam blend that is breathable. It is CertiPUR-US certified and comes without CFCs, mercury, lead, formaldehyde, ozone depleters, TDCPP, PBDEs or TDCPP.
The pillow is available in Standard, Queen and King sizes. The Standard one measures 20-inches by 26-inches. The Queen size measures 20-inches by 30-inches. The King one measures 20-inches by 36-inches.
The pillow is machine washable with a guarantee that the pillow will not flatten after washing. It is hypoallergenic with resistance to dust mites and other things that cause allergies to flare up.
The cover slides over the inner case. It has an attractive triangular criss-cross pattern. The patterned cover is made from 60% polyester and 40% Rayon with bamboo infused fibers for improved breathability and odor control.
There is some off-gassing noticeable with this product. This is completely normal for a foam-based pillow. Either using Febreeze and machine washing it for an hour or letting it air out for a couple of days resolves the issue.
The pillows and covers are made in California, USA. They come with a 5-year warranty and a 30-day money back guarantees too.
The Coop Home Goods Shredded pillow is a flexible product with an adjustable foam fill. It?s cool and comfortable. It perhaps doesn?t have enough loft or density for a side sleeper, but other sleeping styles are better supported.

Snuggle-Pedic Ultra Luxury Shredded Adjustable Pillow Review
The Snuggle-Pedic Shredded pillow has an inner casing that unzips letting you remove some of the bits of memory foam to reduce its loft. This is the same approach as with the Coop product reviewed above.
The memory foam pillow is available in Standard, King and Queen sizes. The foam is Biogreen and carries a Certipur-US certification. The materials and foam are flame retardant, doesn?t have ozone depleters, and is without mercury, metals, leads, formaldehyde, and phthalates.
The cover is vented with tiny perforations to let the air flow. It is made from 56.4% polyester, 43% viscose derived from bamboo for better breathability and odor control, and 0.6% Lycra for stretch-ability.
The adjustable loft allows this pillow to be modified to suit stomach or back sleepers; not only side sleepers who require a higher loft to be comfortable. The ventilation from the shredded foam and the airy cover keeps the pillow cool to sleep on.
The foam is designed to never go flat even after machine washing the entire product. There is a 90-day refund policy and a surprising 20-year warranty.
The Snuggle-Pedic Shredded is a good option for people who don?t mind adjusting the loft by removing some foam filling. It?s machine washable, has a bamboo-viscose stretchy cover, and extensive return and warranty periods.

Sleep Restoration Gel Pillow Review
The Sleep Restoration Gel Pillow is a mixture of a fiber fill and gel that provides copious support plus a cooling effort too. The two-pack option is provided in Queen and King sizes.
The gel fiber is designed to be extremely plush for ultimate soft comfort on top. The fiber still offers good support when laying down though. There are no chemicals used in the production of the product. The hypoallergenic properties protect from germ, allergens, and dust mites to ensure an uninterrupted sleep.
The white premium cotton cover is sealed all around without a discernible pattern. It does have a pretty trim around the edge. The pillow is resistant to stains and fading from machine washing; machine washing is possible with this pillow.
There is a 30-day guarantee for your satisfaction with this product.
The Sleep Restoration Gel Pillow is an ultra-plush model that you?re going to sink into. The use of gel fiber is a great solution for keeping cool during hot nights while the fiber won?t allow the pillow to get cold on a chilly night; a great combination. It does lack the kind of neck and back support that some people require from their pillow.

Coop Home Goods Eden Pillow with Adjustable Fill & Gel Memory Foam Review
The Coop Eden Pillow combines a number of interesting features that make it a winner. It has an inner cover made from polyester which unzips to allow the hypoallergenic gel memory foam to be removed to create the level of loft that one requires.
The gel foam is separated into small sections which absorb heat better and share the warmth with other gel particles to spread the heat inside to keep the pillow surface cooler. Poly fibers are also included to help the separated foam sections from clumping together.
The pillow is available in Standard, Queen and King sizes. The Standard measures 20-inches by 26-inches, the Queen measures 20-inches by 30-inches, and the King measures 20-inches by 36-inches.
The outer cover is produced from a blend of 60% polyester and 40% Rayon made from bamboo for odor management and increased breathability. There is a stitched patterned edge around the pillow case and its appearance looks premium.
The wide gusset is intended to prevent the pillow pushing up on either side when lying down on the center of it. There is improved edge support as a result and the overall support level is good for a variety of sleeping styles.
The foam used is certified as CertiPUR-US, so it?s free of various flame retardant materials, metals and other unwanted materials.
The pillow and the cover are?machine washable. While they?re hypoallergenic to avoid germ and mildew buildup, being able to wash them in the machine improves their long-term value.
Any chemical smell when unwrapping the pillow is easy to remove by washing it or leaving it to air out for several days until the smell disappears.
The Coop Eden Pillow offers a good combination of flexible fill levels, cooling gel foam, machine washable, and a wide gusset for better edge support.

Cr Sleep Memory Foam Contour Pillow Review
The Cr Sleep Memory Foam Contour Pillow is designed to provide great neck support while sleeping. Its Standard size measures 24-inches by 16-inches. The height of the pillow varies from 4-inches on the low end to 4.7-inches at the back, with an undulating section in the middle.
The blue-colored CertiPUR-US certified memory foam gets its color from the gel that?s been incorporated into it. The gel absorbs heat and moves it throughout the pillow to avoid the area beneath the head and neck getting overly hot. There are also numerous holes throughout the pillow, including at the edges, which lets any trapped hot air escape.
The inner cover uses a Jersey material to let air circulate. The outer cover is a made from 65% polyester and uses a botanic fiber known as Tencel for its other 35%. Tencel originates from wood and helps with breathability while still being hygienic and natural.
The foam is medium-firm which is good for side, stomach and back sleepers alike. It is also antimicrobial to avoid germs accumulating over time.
The Cr Sleep Memory Foam Contour Pillow is a high loft pillow with cooling gel and an interesting choice of natural fiber in its cover rather than using bamboo fibers as is commonly observed.

Cr Sleep Ventilated Memory Foam Contour Pillow Review
The Cr Sleep Ventilated Memory Foam Contour Pillow is a slightly smaller version similar to the previously reviewed product from the same Chinese manufacturer.
The pillow is again made from gel infused memory foam which uses their AirCell perforations throughout the foam to let air escape from all sides. The Standard size pillow measures 23.6-inches by 15.7-inches which is smaller than the previous model above. The depth varies from 4-inches to 4.3-inches which are also shallower too.
The inner cover is Jersey to allow the foam to breathe and let the heat escape. The outer cover is produced from 65% polyester and 35% wood-based Tencel botanic fiber. Both covers are washable, but not the pillow itself.
The foam is CertiPUR-US certified and doesn?t have any dangerous materials or metals included.
The contour design will suit people sleeping on their back, stomach or side. The moderately lower height is likely to be easier to use for people who are petite or slighter.

The memory foam is soft with a medium-plush feel that won?t be for everyone. It is CertiPUR-US certified and conforms to all regulations about materials used. Features & Benefits
There are a few features and benefits that you receive when sleeping on a memory foam pillow.
Maintaining the correct posture using a pillow to keep the spinal cord in a straight position avoids problems with the neck and shoulder areas. Getting a pillow at the right height for you avoids straining the neck muscles while sleeping.
Memory foam in pillows reduces the pressure points on the body. Without the pressure points, pain is relieved while sleeping. Keeping the right body position avoids reactivating past injuries. Anyone with muscles or their spine out of alignment avoids inflammation using memory foam and reduces the pain experienced.
Some memory foam pillows are machine washable. In other cases, the cover is removable and washable. With the reduced heat buildup, a sleeper will sweat less (if at all) which helps to keep the pillow cleaner.
The foam used is hypoallergenic. It is formulated to avoid the dust mites and mildew buildup over time. Breathing is easier, especially for people with various respiratory issues.
Firmness & Support
The firmness of a memory foam pillow is often medium-firm which delivers better support than some other types of pillows where you sink down too far. With less firmness, reduced neck and back support are provided. The curvature of some types of memory foam pillows is shaped to support the inverted C-shape of the neck with the head resting comfortably taking the pressure off. The body?s sleeping posture is intended to rest the neck muscles which have been holding up the head all day and do require rest.
A pillow has a density from 1 pound to 5 pounds. Memory foam pillows tend to be 3-5 pounds whereas some other types offer less support and so weigh less. The lower density pillows provide reduced neck and head support but have that super plush cloud floating effect.
A layer of cooling gel beads at the top of a memory foam pillow reduces heat retention. The gel changes its form to effectively suck in body heat and then spreads the warmth across the entire layer of gel beads rather than keeping it centralized in one spot. Some pillows use a gel coating on the top of one side of the pillow whereas others infuse gel throughout the memory foam.
Pillows come in a standard size and then usually size variances to better match Queen or King size mattresses. It is common to see at least two sizes offered with a memory foam pillow product.
There are pillows in a number of different shapes:
- Traditional: Rectangular shape but include some cooling elements from memory foam to sleep cooler.
- Contoured: The depression in the center of the pillow permits greater support for the neck, shoulders, and back. Good for spinal realignment, improved circulation and reducing snoring through clearing the passageways.
- Egg crate: A foam pillow specially designed with lumps inside that breaks up warm spots and lets you find a comfortable position. Ideal for back and side sleepers.
- Neck roll: Sometimes used to relieve neck or back pain. Roll the back over them to relieve pressure. Used as a throw to lean on while reading a book or watching TV in bed.
- Wedge: The Triangular-shaped pillow that cuts snoring and acid reflex levels. Useful to prop oneself up higher in bed without needing to stack several pillows on top of each other to achieve the same effect.
- V: The V-shaped design is sometimes better for stomach sleepers. The idea is that the head and the neck lay in a better position to relieve pressure and stress from those areas.
The warranty period for a pillow runs from a year or two right up to five years in top-of-the-line pillows. A trial period of 30 to 90-days is usually provided too.
Things to know
There are a few things to consider before buying a memory foam pillow:
- Lifespan ? Both shredded and single piece memory foam pillows lose their form over time. It?s true that shredded foam is more fluff-able and therefore can be reformed better than a single piece product. Most pillows last 3-4 years with better brands lasting a full 5 years. With pillows that cannot be washed, bacteria could buildup which is one aspect to consider when thinking about lifespan.
- Warranty ? Many warranties last as long as the product does. A warranty may be offered up to five years, but shorter ones are not a great concern. Just because a warranty is five years does not mean the product is better quality.
- Materials & Allergies ? Memory foam pillows use different formulations of foam, some polyester, and covers made from cotton and sometimes bamboo. The bamboo fiber makes the cover hypoallergenic and more breathable. Most memory foam is also good for avoiding germ and bacteria buildup over time.
- Personal Preferences ? The right pillow often depends on your needs. For cooler sleeping, a pillow with either a layer of gel beads or infused inside the pillow will help. For back pain or neck pain, a contoured pillow is going to offer better support at the right angle. It?s also fair to say that the right kind of pillow for you will change over time depending on your needs.
- Sizing ? With memory foam pillows, manufacturers often create more than one size. There?s the Standard size and then at least one alternative in most cases. The idea is to match the width of the mattress to avoid gaps that could tweak the neck while sleeping. Pillow manufacturers are not standardized with sizing which is why it?s a good idea to buy multiple pillows of the same size and brand, and not mix and match.
- Position & Sleep Posture ? There are pillows suitable for every sleeping position. Back sleepers will find some types of pillow more comfortable. Ditto for stomach sleepers and side sleepers. Things like pillow height effect the neck angle and position suiting certain sleeping postures while straining the neck with others height levels. If you have a personal preference for sleeping position, choose a pillow that?s appropriate for that.
- Thickness & Firmness ? The thickness and firmness of a pillow are also relevant to sleeping position. A side sleeper has a higher head and neck position and therefore needs a pillow with greater loft/height. A back sleeper requires far less loft to align the neck and spine properly.
Q: How many years can I use my pillow?
A: A memory foam pillow has a useful life of 4-5 years in many cases. Watch for allergen buildup which would reduce how long you should use it.
Q: Can I wash my memory foam pillow?
A: That depends on the manufacturer?s instructions. Some are washable, some are not. Certainly, the cover is removable and washable in almost all cases even if the pillow inside it is not.
Q: Won?t memory foam get too hot?
A: No. New foam formulations and the use of both shredded foam and gel beads to capture heat all help reduce help and disperse it.
Q: Does the foam stay in my old position or reform back to its normal shape?
A: This type of pillow will reform back to its normal shape over a limited time. The latest foam formulations speed up the reforming process.
Q: Does the product smell of chemicals when I receive it?
A: There is some off-gassing for 2-3 days in most cases. Open the packaging and let the pillow air out in a spare bedroom until the gas has subsided. Washable pillows can be thrown into the washing machine to remove the smell in a couple of hours.
Q: Should I use a pillowcase with the memory foam pillow?
A: Each pillow already comes with its own case. Using a second pillowcase may prevent some of the breathability and health benefits from shining through.
Q: Will a memory foam product improve my neck and back pain?
A: These types of products provide pressure point relief and improved support to the neck, shoulders, and back areas. It is important to purchase a product that is high-quality and shaped in way to support your typical sleeping position; this makes a huge difference to its effectiveness. No one can guarantee pain reduction, but memory foam has been found over the years to offer the best opportunity to reduce a range of painful symptoms that occur during sleep.
